Japanese Knotweed and iNaturalist Project

On May 5, LCA will hold an event at Cota Field (Starksboro), in collaboration with the Starksboro Conservation Commission, to educate the community about how to identify Japanese knotweed, how to use iNaturalist to map its location in the Lewis Creek watershed, and to give a summary of our upcoming manual removal demonstration project (in Ferrisburgh). Mike Bald (our consultant from Got Weeds?) will be there, as well as herbalist Sophie Cassel, who will speak about how she uses knotweed to make medicine. Light refreshments will be provided. If you're interested in learning more about how to use iNaturalist for this or other projects, please try to download the app to your mobile device before you come to the event, and set up an account online (at inaturalist.org or through the app) beforehand. Please fill out this form to be added to our knotweed mailing list (https://forms.gle/NyGbPDcLFqQ4yFn99), or feel free to just show up on May 5. Read more about the project here, and watch our interview with WCAX here.

Online water quality scorecard map training

LCA is excited to announce that we’ve moved our scorecard map that shows water quality conditions in the watershed to an online interactive format, with the help of Pam Brangan from CCRPC. This map includes additional layers that will be useful to planners and Conservation Commissions as they work to understand water quality conditions in the watershed.  The three products associated with this are as follows:

·   Story map (a good place to start, with links to the other products) - https://ccrpc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=91bf486743b2485bbc03c43712592e89

·   Interactive map - https://map.ccrpcvt.org/LCA-SouthChittendenRiverWatch/

·   Dashboard - https://ccrpc.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/1b44205266d44408a9c1d079b4fc5059

We will provide an online training on June 24 at 7 PM. Please email Kate Kelly at lewiscreekorg@gmail.com to receive the Zoom invitation.

Presentation by Mike Kline, Fluvial Matters LLC

Mike will discuss the basics of fluvial geomorphology, and why floodplains and natural sinuosity are important, then will get into details about how climate change may affect our streams (in particular, Lewis Creek), and what we can do to protect brook trout and other cold water species habitats.

This presentation will be followed by a field trip on Sat. Nov. 16 to visit one of the sites chosen by engineers, to discuss potential habitat improvements that could be done to benefit wildlife.
