Lewis Creek Association is looking for your help to remove a non-native invasive plant that threatens to invade the newly restored wetland behind the United Church of Hinesburg. Phragmites (a very tall wetland grass, also known as common reed), can create a monoculture that reduces biodiversity and affects the water table. There is a patch of Phragmites that has taken hold just upstream of the restored wetland, and we are concerned it will spread into the restored area. We hope to spade it (cut it underground) twice a year to reduce its density and control it.

Please join us for our first session on Tuesday evening, August 4, at 6 PM, to learn the technique and help us remove this introduced species. We will have a few spades on hand, but please bring if you have them: flat-edged spades (not pointed shovels), loppers/shears, gardening or utility gloves.
