VT River Management Program's River Corridor Plan Guide, February
2007
Lewis Creek Association asked Kristen
Underwood and Evan Fitzgerald to host a discussion about methods for
mapping impervious surface.
Evan presented his thesis research
from South Burlington. For this data, please contact
Evan Fitzgerald.
Kristen reviewed results of a 2004 Municipal Planning Grant she
completed along with Chris Davis of Weybridge, VT for the towns of
Charlotte and Hinesburg.

report.
Then they had a discussion about methods of estimating impervious
surface, relevance of impervious surface % to geomorphic and habitat
conditions, and planning/zoning strategies that rural towns could
undertake to prevent stream impacts resulting from growing
development.
One important theme that came up was the dominance of road and
driveway networks in the composition of impervious surfaces in rural
towns (discussed a bit further in the MPG report). Evan’s research
also shows a possible lower threshold for negative impacts of
impervious surfaces in the smaller-sized subwatersheds (such as the
headwaters regions of Starksboro, Hinesburg).
